Right from the time, he could barely talk as a toddler, future musician Max Polyakov has always had a powerful interest in music. His mother constantly said that each time there was music in the house, Max Polyakov would constantly bounce up and down to the beat although he had no idea what was being said. His father, being a singer himself, was beyond overjoyed to see little Max walking in his footsteps. Without much thought, he began to play music in his house every chance he could get, to see the little toddler bounce several times. By the time Max Polyakov was five, he could groove to any song played by his father and could even sing along. Their home was a happy one filled with music.
Max Polyakov’s father always said that music was learned rather than imbibed by chance, so he took Max to a music school by the time he started primary school. Music lessons used to bore him because all he wanted to do was to play with his friends after school. There were several times that he would cry so loudly and kick against his parents for dragging him to his music class. Soon he decided to be an unrepentant troublemaker at his music school. He would not learn his notes nor sing along to the songs he was taught. He absolutely refused to do his homework as well. His mother became worried and wondered if they should lay off the music classes for a bit, but his father was adamant, spanking him each time he acted up. Max Polyakov was frustrated with the situation at home, but he could really do nothing about it at seven. Soon enough, he resigned and learned how to play the piano. He was great at it by the time he was ten, being able to play by ear as well as read sheet music. He stopped attending the music classes at ten and chose to join the school drama team to get away from music.
During that time, Max Polyakov had not stopped loving music. There was a certain feeling that playing and singing brought to him. However, in order to make his father believe that he had grown out of his love for music, he chose to explore his musical tendencies everywhere but at home.
This was Max Polyakov’s plan until he turned fifteen. The school drama team was producing a musical for the very first time. He was instantly interested and signed up to be one of the musicians. The school did not accept him because he was not a part of the musical team in the school. He was greatly disappointed, but he still acted the part he was given to the best of his abilities.
For Max Polyakov’s university applications, he was very sure he wanted to study music as a minor in addition to his computer science major. His father was surprised by his choice but chose not to probe, remembering how violently Max Polyakov had kicked against his involvement earlier in his life.
It was in the university that Max Polyakov’s love for music blossomed. Being a music student, he found the time to be involved in many music groups so that he could be exposed to several music styles. He found that although he favoured more of the RnB style, he had absolutely no qualms in getting immersed with the hip-hop culture or spending time with the classical folks. To him, music was the expression of the soul and could manifest in any form. To restrict a person just one form would be to stifle the music.
During his second year at the university, there were several openings for a disk jockey at a party on campus. Max Polyakov decided to try and audition. He did not get the part, and so he was once again discouraged. However, He found solace in his piano and played it whenever he felt down. Soon he found an advertisement for a disk jockey in the next town which was just a few miles away from school. Max Polyakov thought that it was worth auditioning for, after all, three times is certainly a charm. This time, Max was given a chance to show what he could really do. His rich music background began to show forth. He was given the role instantly and was given some referrals on the spot. He was over the moon with joy, yet he kept this breakthrough to himself. Max Polyakov started to make money off these gigs. He went each night after school to play and then host parties, and he was paid substantially per gigs. Max Polyakov decided to save some of the money and possibly invest in a studio later in life. He was really excited about this new income he was getting.
Because of how good he was behind the mic, he kept getting invited to gigs in that other town so that during his summer break he went over to those places and lodged there instead of going home. Max Polyakov kept giving his quota to his music team at school and in spite of his extra-curricular activities, he was able to study well enough to get good grades.
Max Polyakov thought about making disk jockeying his career choice after school rather than responding to the various job interviews he had received after graduating. He decided to talk to his mother about it. His mother was extremely surprised he had continued doing music in school and was proud of him. However, she advised him to get a stable job and consider disk jockeying on the side, especially because she felt there would be no regular income. Max Polyakov begged to differ, but he decided that he would go for the interviews so that he could at least afford basic amenities without touching his hard-earned money from his disk jockeying nights. He was thinking about investing the money in something greater.
Unfortunately, school and work were two different entities and Max Polyakov was unable to balance his gigs with his job. He struggled for a year and kept going to work extremely exhausted. His performance at work dropped, yet his fan base and his hidden music career stayed flourishing. Max Polyakov felt it was important to choose one or he stood the chance of losing both. Max stayed with the music and left his workplace. He was certain he would not be missed.
Having no extra income apart from the money he made from gigs made things a bit hard for Max Polyakov. He had to move out of the apartment he was living in if he wanted to be able to save and still eat and be able to pay his rent. Max Polyakov also drastically altered his standard of living to make space for the days of little to no income.
This struggle seemed tough for the first few weeks, but Max Polyakov was willing to work it out. He stuck to his changes and maintained a good attitude for all of his gigs. Whenever Max had no gigs, he used that time to learn more about music. He spent time in the studio just next to his house watching several musicians perform. The studio owner saw that Max Polyakov had a potential and began to solicit his advice for mixing some of the beats and producing some of the music. Max Polyakov had no music producing background but the studio owner was still interested in his fresh ideas.
Max continued to offer them and put his entire soul into what he was doing. The artists who came around to use the place for a fee constantly enjoyed having Max Polyakov there because he had a certain way in which he infused different genres in order to create a totally original sound. It was here that Max Polyakov felt truly at home.
Max Polyakov’s experiences, according to him, were not all that smooth. He had to make some hard life decisions in order to get where he was. In his free time, he decided to design a blog that gave young aspiring artists something to read and learn from, as well as one that could be a form of advertisement for himself and his music.
Roscoe, the studio owner, who doubled as a sound engineer decided to hire Max Polyakov full time. Max Polyakov was ecstatic at this job offer. He liked the idea of a stable income no matter how small. This new job paled in comparison to the four-figure salary he was receiving at his former job, but he felt it would suffice. He went to work every day with a new and renewed sense of duty. He worked hard during the day and even had to stay behind for some nights. He was able to have access to some of the artists and give them advice on their music choices. He never stopped accepting gigs, so he constantly found the time to go out of town to play for different gatherings. There was also a nightclub nearby that Max Polyakov was thinking of applying to since his regular job did not pay much and his disk jockeying freelance gigs were becoming few and far between. He looked out for any vacancies and quickly auditioned each time he saw an opening. Having two stable jobs and a few gigs, he was sure, would significantly increase his income.
Max Polyakov took the time to talk about all these experiences on his blog, highlighting how difficult it was to make it without referrals in the music industry. He also put out a few tips for people who wanted to venture into singing, teaching them a few things he thought were basic but lacking.
Pretty soon, one of his several auditions pulled through and Max Polyakov was called in to play during one party at the nightclub for the owners to assess his skills. When Max got on the floor, he gave it all he had and instantly impressed his judges. He was given the job, and because of his expertise and professionalism, his pay was stipulated to be above the pay grade of a usual amateur disk jockey. Max Polyakov could not believe his luck. After all those years, his dreams were finally paying off. He told his first employer, the studio owner, about his new job. He assured him that it would not affect his job at the studio. The studio owner was happy for Max and even suggested that Max become partners with him so that they could scout for talent and share the profits. Max Polyakov could not believe his ears. He graciously accepted the offer and worked two jobs the next couple of months, being paid far more than he was receiving at his former job.
With his friend, the studio owner, began to scout for talent and Max Polyakov got the rare opportunity to produce some of the talents. They were happy with the work he gave them, and they excelled in their delivery. A few of them even got hits that made Max and his partner happy.
Now, Max had generated enough content with his blog so that he had a great fan base. They looked forward to his content each week. He made sure each time to encourage young artists who felt like they could not make it hold on. He kept telling them never to give up. The aspiring disk jockeys looked up to him for the various tips he put out each week and put some to practice, each receiving great results. It could be said that although disk jockey Max Polyakov had a slow start into his music career, he absolutely deserved the recognition he got.
